Poetry Friday: Masterpiece

Welcome to Poetry Friday. This week's host is Irene Latham's Live Your Poem blog. There you'll find an abundance of poetry goodness all in one beautiful place!

Today, I watched my almost 2 year old granddaughter draw a picture. She scribbled, studied, shaded, dotted, and studied some more. I have no idea what it is she made, but I know she worked intently on it for quite a while, and she was very excited to showcase it on the refrigerator. Today's poem is inspired by her endeavors.

Masterpiece
by Kimberly M. Hutmacher

Dots, lines, circles, curves
What will it turn out to be?

Sketch, shade, shape, trace
I'm just beginning to see!

Clouds? Sky? Sun? Lake?
A robin perched in a tree?

Form, frame, final touch
A masterpiece made by me!

  1. I love this! What a great source of inspiration, and so much we can learn about the creative process by watching/listening to a 2 year old at play... #1: PLAY ! :) Thank you for sharing this lovely poem... and the art too. xo

    1. Thanks, Irene. Yes, PLAY is serious work for toddlers. I have to admit that I am more patient and in less of a hurry with Aria than I was with my own kiddos. I'm so much better at just relaxing, watching, and enjoying these little moments. No need to rush :)

  2. My 22 month old granddaughter loves to create art as well. Her creations are not limited to paper as the markings on her white tights, other apparel, carpet and furniture confirm.

    2. Yes, Cheriee, I have to watch Aria like a hawk. She's given herself inkpen tattoo art and added her own sparkle to a brand new pair of tennis shoes :)

  3. Kimberly, I am particularly drawn to your post today. My grandbaby is 21 months and my daughter made her a drawing/painting table that lights up. She loves to scribble, too. I have a piece of her art that I am placing on my refrigerator (Grandma pride) What I especially like is that you created a poem from your granddaughter's art creation. My husband found an article about a 2 year old in Chelsea (NYC) who is selling her art paintings at an art gallery. Amazing. Thanks for sharing a wonderful connection that we have now.

  4. Love that you watched her as she so seriously made her picture, Kimberly. There is more than we know about a two year old's thinking. I imagine she will love that you captured her work with a poem, too.

    1. Thanks, Linda. I find myself taking more time to just watch and enjoy her- more time than I did with my own kiddos. As we age, I think we begin to appreciate how quickly time flies and how those small moments must be savored and treasured.

  5. Wonderful! The earnest art and the poetic response from a lovely grandma encouraging creativity. This makes me think of Penny Klostermann's series pairing art/poetry of family members - https://pennyklostermann.com/episodes-of-a-great-nephew-a-great-aunt/ . :0)

  6. Some masterpieces are really open for interpretation, aren't they? It's all about enjoying the process. :-)

  7. Oh, I do remember these moments with my sons. Sometimes I used to sit beside them and label their artworks - and still have them in my 'keep it forever' file. Joy!

    1. Kat, I still have tubs of my kiddos' artwork. I keep thinking I need to get them scanned smaller into one large collage and framed. I saw someone do it online, and it looked great!

  8. Oh, I love that you capture special moments in poetry. I hope I can do that for my grandchildren someday. I try to with my own children and usually, I'm so close to the action that it's tough. But, that wonderful chance to be patient, take the time, observe that a grandparent can take--I just thing that's the bee-knees. I'm not wishing a moment away. But, I do love the place you are in. It's special.

  13. What a delightful poem and drawing! It's such a gift to observe a child working so intently, engrossed in the moment, and not attached to the end product--although that will probably come a couple years down the line!

    Thanks for sharing both.

  14. Send that directly to Babybug or Ladybug, Kimberly. Those stages of drawing are fascinating and your poem came out perfect.
